History of the Domaine de Dolomieu

Of noble origin

The estate’s history dates back to the late 17th century when Pierre and François Gratet, sons of Pierre Gratet – a bourgeois ennobled by Henry IV – acquired several manors, including that of Dolomieu.

The estate then endured through the centuries, passed down from generation to generation, evolving with the changing times through renovations and extensions. Despite these changes, the château's architectural charm and spirit have remained intact.

Déodat Gratet, a renowned scientist from Dolomieu

Déodat Gratet de Dolomieu was born at the estate on 23 June 1750. He was a brilliant naturalist and mineralogist whose career was to leave a lasting mark. His expeditions and research led him to identify dolomite, the rock that would later give its name to the Dolomites mountain range.

A contemporary revival

In 2017, the estate underwent major restoration work led by renowned designers. The aim was clear: to restore the château to its former glory while incorporating modern comforts, discreet technology and top-class services.

Today, the 4-star hotel offers three distinct areas: the Château and the Aux Cyprès and Aux Cèdres buildings. They cater to travellers, families, business guests and connoisseurs alike, offering something to suit everyone’s tastes: a historic and refined atmosphere at the Château, or contemporary design and modern comfort in the two modern Aux Cèdres and Aux Cyprès buildings.

The Domaine de Dolomieu is also a conference hotel in the Rhône-Alpes region, offering a range of venues for meetings, corporate events and business gatherings.

In 2023, following this renaissance, the estate officially opened its doors under the Best Western Premier Collection brand.
